Our Farming Philosophy: How We Grow Our Vegetables
Growing Methods
Our farming approach is rooted in organic agriculture, drawing inspiration from permaculture principles and regenerative farming practices. Simply put, we grow our vegetables in the most natural way possible, without using any synthetic pesticides, herbicides, or chemical fertilizers. We work to nurture and preserve the soil, enrich it with organic compost, and protect the natural habitats surrounding the farm in order to foster a balanced ecosystem that helps prevent pests and diseases from becoming established.
Over the years, we have come to recognize the importance of supporting the organic farming movement as a whole. For this reason, we have decided to join Israel’s organic certification program, and we expect to receive official organic certification by the end of 2026.
Growing in the Fields
Most of our vegetables are grown outdoors using the most natural methods possible. We do not use any sprays or pesticides in the open fields, including those approved for organic farming. We fertilize with inputs approved for organic agriculture and invest in building healthy soil through crop rotation, fallow periods, and nitrogen-fixing cover crops. This approach sometimes means losing part of the harvest to pests, but we believe it is the best way to maintain a healthy balance with the surrounding ecosystem.
Growing in the Greenhouses
In our greenhouses, we grow peppers, tomatoes, cherry tomatoes, and cucumbers throughout most of the year, and leafy greens during the winter months. Fertilization is based on organic compost approved for organic farming. Unlike in the open fields, we occasionally use organic-approved sprays in the greenhouses when necessary, though we strive to keep their use to a minimum. Crops such as tomatoes, peppers, and cucumbers are generally not well suited to open-field cultivation in our region and therefore require greenhouse conditions.
Tithes and Offerings
At Kaima Beit Zayit, we separate terumot and ma’asrot (tithes and offerings) from all produce grown on the farm, in accordance with Jewish agricultural law. Additional products arriving at our packing house may come from other sources.
